FONSECA
An Indic Lexicon
In the tumultuous decades of the twentieth century amid two world wars and a sense of selfhood growing in the colonies of Asia and Africa, Angelo da Fonseca, a young Goan artist set about painting Christian icons in new settings and colours. This artistic journey opened up vistas of a “swadeshi” and united India in spite of cultural diversities and political differences. A sizeable number of Fonseca’s works reveal the artist’s reference to unique historical moments, memorable personalities and events in India. At the same time, the artist strove to find through his icons a home for Christian art in postcolonial India. The exhibition seeks to display these unique works and familiarise Goan as well as foreign art lovers with the Fonseca legacy.
