THE ARCHIVE IN JESUIT HISTORY
A Workshop for Jesuit Archivists in South Asia
Archives are “places of memory.” In the Society of Jesus they constitute a rich patrimony since its very beginnings, while also contributing to the successive spread of its global mission. Apart from crystallising the Society’s foundational experience, its historical archives also become sites of interpreting this experience across time and contexts. The Archive in Jesuit history thus represents the fount of Jesuit experience lived across generations of Jesuits, but also instrumentalised in its governmental practices.
What, then, constitutes a Jesuit archive? How does one approach the historical archives of the Society? What futures do these archives hold for scholarship on the Society of Jesus in South Asia? The Archive in Jesuit History is designed as a workshop for Jesuit archivists who engage with the Society’s historical archives and its cultural patrimony. Organised in collaboration with the Jesuit Archives in Rome (ARSI), the workshop will introduce participants to a conceptual understanding of what makes for an archive along with current practices that govern and regulate such archival holdings. In addition to some specialist sessions on the preventive conservation of archival collections, the workshop will familiarise participants with the value of such collections for historical research.
